How to use social media

Those of us who have a computing device or smart phone and are connected to the internet have great opportunities to keep in touch with friends and family through social media. We realise many older people are resistant to the use of social media and have concerns about privacy and scams.

The fears are real but these are not normal times and the risks of social isolation probably outweigh any perceived risks from your computer. Members who are users can vouch for the important role social media is playing in helping us to keep connected. This section of the web site gives you a series of links for whatever application (app) you select – the link gives very clear instructions about how to download the app and start using it
Advice!
The world is divided into those who learn by following instructions (most older people!) and those who use trial and error (most teenagers). I recommend a little of both approaches.

Use the instructions and if you encounter a problem just experiment with trial and error. Don’t be afraid to push buttons and try different options – computers are very resilient devices and it’s practically impossible to damage them by doing this.

AN APPEAL
If any members are reasonable competent at setting up and using Social media (not necessarily experts), would they be prepared to be contacted on the phone by a member who is having difficulties? It may be possible to resolve these for them. Please email me and I’ll co-ordinate a list.
