Science Meeting 14th February 2023

Main topics

The event featured a series of presentations, beginning with Joe Henderson's introduction of a video on the topic of "How sugar affects the brain." This was followed by Stuart Pollard, who presented a corporate video showcasing a company's plans to harness solar and wind power in Morocco and transmit it to the UK via undersea cables. A subsequent presentation delved into the concept of gravity-based energy storage in disused mineshafts, of which there are thought to be millions around the world.

Other topics

Brian Taylor introduced a book

The Polkinghorne Reader: Science, Faith and the Search for Meaning (John Polkinghorne, 2010)

John Polkinghorne KBE FRS (1930-2021) was Professor of Mathematical Physics at Cambridge University and an Anglican priest. He wrote widely on issues of science and Christian faith. The Polkinghorne Reader weaves together key extracts from his writings on core issues such as the nature of science and the physical world, cosmology, creation, providence, human nature, prayer and miracle. This is a very readable book for someone with some knowledge of physics, but should not be regarded as in the genre of ‘popular science’. I would highly recommend it for its depth of analysis of issues at the interface between physics and Christian faith.

Gravity energy storage (another video)

This is a video produced by Gravitricity, the Edinburgh based company referred to already. We didn't have time to show it in the meeting (it's about 18 minutes long) but members may be interested.
